The experience

Itinerary

1. Municipal Theatre of Piraeus

   The tour begins in front of the Dimotiko Theatro, a neoclassical building of 1895 by Ioannis Lazarimos, and a symbol of Piraeus becoming a cultural centre rather than only a port.

2. Wine and cheese at a local cheese bar

   Greek winemaking goes back over 6,000 years, and Piraeus was the bridge between Greek vineyards and the world. Regional cheeses paired with Greek wines, and how trade shaped the local cooking.

3. Marina Zeas and Trouba

   Pasalimani, one of the oldest natural harbours in the Mediterranean and the naval base of the Athenian triremes. Then Trouba, famous in the 1950s and 60s for its cabarets, its sailors and rebetiko, Greece's urban blues.

4. The port, Themistokleous Square and a Greek coffee

   The Port of Piraeus, founded in the fifth century BC by Themistocles, from which the Athenian fleet sailed to Salamis. Then a traditional Greek coffee, brewed slowly in a briki.

5. Miran, and Mani pies

   Miran Delicatessen, founded by Armenian refugees over a century ago: pastourmas, dolmas and lakerda. The tour finishes at Τι Πίτα Τραβάς with the hand-stretched pies the Maniates brought to Piraeus in the nineteenth century.
